Plastering & skimming in Cloonfad, Ballyhaunis & Co. Roscommon

From newly boarded walls to rooms being refurbished, plastering and skimming help prepare a sound, even finish for the next stage of decorating. Contact PJ Morrison about plastering work in and around Cloonfad and Ballyhaunis.

A smooth finish starts with the surface underneath. Existing plaster, new plasterboard, corners and junctions all need to be assessed before choosing the right preparation and finish. Loose material, visible cracking or signs of moisture should be discussed rather than simply covered over.

The agreed work may cover a single room, several ceilings or plastering within a larger refurbishment. Access, protection of floors and fittings, and the sequence of any other trades should be considered before starting.

Fresh plaster needs suitable drying conditions before it is painted. Drying time varies with the background, weather and ventilation, so the decorating stage should be planned around the actual condition of the finish.

From first conversation to finishing touches

How your project progresses.

The details and timing depend on your property and the agreed scope. Here is the usual approach.

  1. 01

    Describe the rooms

Send the number of rooms, approximate sizes and photographs of the walls or ceilings.

  2. 02

    Assess the background

Check the surfaces and identify preparation, repairs or moisture issues that need attention.

  3. 03

    Confirm the scope

Agree which surfaces are included, the finish required and how the rooms will be accessed.

  4. 04

    Protect and prepare

Protect the work area and prepare the background and edges for plastering.

  5. 05

    Apply the finish

Complete the agreed plastering or skimming and check the surface and junction details.

  6. 06

    Allow drying

Discuss drying and ventilation before arranging painting or other finishing work.

Before we begin

Your questions.

Can old walls be skimmed?

Often, but the existing finish must be assessed first. Loose plaster, damp or an unsuitable background may need attention before skimming.

How soon can I paint fresh plaster?

Wait until it has dried sufficiently and follow the recommendations for the plaster and paint system. There is no single drying time that suits every room.
